Craft Closet Makeover on a Budget

January 16, 2021

Hey Friends,

Late last year, I had the opportunity of sharing this makeover with the Neat Method and today I’m sharing all the details on how I completed our craft closet makeover on a budget. Prior to the makeover, the closet served as a dump zone for some of my home décor items. As part of a broader clean up and purge, I decided it was time to tackle this closet and make it more functional for the family.

As with many of you, we transitioned to virtual schooling in March of last year. In addition to school supplies littered all over our home, there were other random papers and items floating around. Plans for a dedicated craft room are still in the works but we needed a quick solution for the moment. The beginning of the year is a great time to purge and get rid of unwanted items. You can also check out my clean up after the holidays post here.

Starting out, I created a mood board and took stock of the things that I have on hand.

Here is what the closet looked like prior to the purge. After the purge,  I started by cleaning it all out and categorizing the supplies to maximize space.

The top shelf is dedicated to my sewing machine and supplies. Prior to the shelf, it sat in a rolling bag. It is compact and placing it on the top shelf works well since I don’t use it as often.

The shelf below this is dedicated to my craft supplies which include paper, paint, cutting tools, beads, craft glue and other tools. With the budget, it was important to make use of items I already had on hand. I was able to get enough clear shoe box containers from a recent wardrobe purge.

The next shelf has the hyacinth baskets that I love. I used these baskets in my pantry project which I completed last year. The style offers a clean look and it is a great way to break up the space since I used majority of plastic bins. The baskets are used to store note cards, 3M wall solutions and miscellaneous catch all bin.

The shelf below stores the majority of the kids school supplies. It was important for it to be easy accessible so they can grab what they need for school.

On the bottom shelf are large canvas bins, I stored extra party supplies, including decorative paper plates, gift bows, tissue and extra gift bags. I also stored bigger school supply items like binders and folders.

On the very bottom is my rolling bag that holds my cameo and additional cutting accessories. It’s great to also have a spot for this tucked away.

With such a small space, it was important to make use of the space wisely. The door organizer from the Container Store, provided the optimal solution for gift wrapping supplies.

The Container Store allows you to customize your door or wall rack. See below for the variety they have already assembled. You are also able to customize your rack in their Design Center for free.

Here you will find the gift wrapper holder on the very bottom and several bins to hold ribbon, twine, tape etc. I like that you can customize this organizer for your specific needs. The door organizer is organized and ready for gifting during the holidays.

The Container Store is my go-to for storage solutions. I love that they have a variety for my needs. When I work on a project, I plan ahead so I can take advantage of the sales.

They also have a POP Perks program that gives discounts and exclusive access to discounts, shopping days, birthday gifts. If you are not a member, you can sign up here for POP! They also have their Annual Elfa storage and installation sale which offers 30% of in December and runs till January every year. You can also look for sales in late Spring and Summer where they offer anywhere from 15-40% off on a variety of items.

For my labeling system, I used the left-over chalkboard labels from my pantry project. The system has worked well and provides flexibility because they are reusable.

Just a reminder of where we started:

The craft closet makeover on a budget project was just what our family needed to keep our school and craft supplies organized. I love being able to go to the closet and find what I need without spending time searching. Happy Organizing!!
