One Room Challenge Spring 2020 Week 1 – The Plan

Hello There! It is week one of the One Room Challenge Spring 2020 and so glad to have you here. This is my second time as a guest, and I am extremely excited to be participating again. Last Spring, I worked on a tween room makeover for my daughter and had so much fun with the experience. You can find out all the weekly details here.

This year, I will be making some updates to my dining room. More on that a little later. If you are new here, you might be wondering what the One Room Challenge is. The One Room Challenge also known as ORC was started by Linda Weinstein in 2011 to encourage a small group of friends to complete a room in their home.

The One Room Challenge currently in its seventeenth season, is a biannual event in April and October that features 20 designers working with brands to complete a space in just six weeks in partnership with Better Homes and Gardens and other amazing brands.

The fun part is being able to participate as a guest and follow the progress of the featured designers and other fellow guest designers. I am thankful that the organizers have extended this season due to the current events going on and excited to still be able to participate. Check out my weekly updates below.

The Plan:

As mentioned previously, I am working on my dining room for this challenge. Here is the before picture of what it looks like.

I wanted this to be a really budget friendly transformation, so we are keeping the main furniture. We have had the table for about 12 years now and while I would love to switch it out some day, it still works for us and is pretty solid. We switched out the chairs about 2 years ago and I still love the look.

Below is the mood board I put together to visualize the changes I want to make in the space.

DIY Projects:

The beams will be built from common board and stained to match closely with the floors. This will be my most tasking DIY to date. While I am nervous about it, I am also excited and cannot wait to take on this challenge.

The wainscoting and trim project will require some good detail. I am contemplating adding wallpaper in the open spaces on the accent wall but have not decided yet.

Other Finishes:

I really love this chandelier at the moment. I think it will fit in well with the overall design but that might also change down the road.

The rug was purchased over a year ago and has been sitting rolled up in the corner right under the window. I am happy to finally put it to good use 😊.

I haven’t completely finalized accessories and wall decor but will be sharing those in the coming weeks.

The ORC this season will be 8 weeks and I am grateful to have the extra time. Thank you so much for stopping by to check my plans out and I hope to see you around in the coming weeks as I tackle this fun and exciting challenge. Until next time…

We are half way into Black History Month, I would We are half way into Black History Month, I would like to share a post that is very dear to me. As a mother, it is important to me that my children grow up feeling confident about their skin.

On the blog this week is a round up of some of our favourite books by black authors for the whole family. Each of these books feature diversity, inclusion and representation. These are all themes that I think are important for them to have as they develop their own identity.

I hope you will find some books on there that you can add to your library

In the meantime, what are some of your favourite children's books that feature black authors?
