Find out how I created my Summer 2021 capsule wardrobe using only 26 pieces of clothing.
We’ve recently been spending. a lot more time at home. With that comes a lot of home projects and organization. I was inspired to start purging my closet earlier this year. I took Marie Kondo’s advice, and decided to only keep items in my closet that truly spark joy! As I was doing this, I also decided to streamline my closet and do something that had been on my bucket list for a while by creating a capsule wardrobe for the summer.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is essentially a small collection of clothing items designed to be worn together.
The idea behind the capsule wardrobe is simple. By limiting your wardrobe to only a few key pieces, you are able to eliminate the decision fatigue that comes when trying to decide what to wear each day.
Have you ever stared at your closet brimming with clothes and still thought to yourself that you have nothing to wear?
The problem with ‘fast fashion’ and our current consumer culture is that we constantly being told that we need more.
More of the latest trend.
More things.
If we could just get more, we would be happier.
Of course, you and I know that life doesn’t work like that.
But the fact remains. It’s easier than ever to buy things that we don’t really need. The result? We end up with a closet full of clothes we don’t need and hardly make use of.
By creating a capsule wardrobe, you are able to be extremely thoughtful and intentional about the clothes that go into the closest. Each item should be carefully considered and it pushes us more to purchase items that we will truly need and will actually wear.
My personal style evolution
I have always loved a neutral wardrobe but veered into lots of colors in recent years.
But in the past year, I’ve had a yearning to pare down my wardrobe to things that are versatile and timeless.
As I reach a milestone year, it has become increasingly clear to me that my love for neutrals is strong and I would like to continue to create a wardrobe that is comfortable, classy, chic, and timeless with as few pieces as possible.
I have always loved the thought of a capsule wardrobe. I figured this would be a great time to take the leap of faith and start creating a wardrobe around the things that I love and that can be used for years to come.
Summer 2021 Capsule Wardrobe Base Colour
My summer 2021 capsule wardrobe features a lot of neutrals.
Regular readers of the blog will know how much I love neutrals. It’s great for home decor as well as for clothing.
Using neutral colors, I have been able to create a wardrobe that can be replicated with other similar pieces. I have owned a good amount of these items for a few years but have also sourced similar pieces for you to be able to create your own.
The plan going forward is to create seasonal capsule wardrobes similar to this summer wardrobe.
Since we’re approaching summer, my first capsule wardrobe is a capsule wardrobe with summer outfits. I will update my closet every season with just a few pieces to reflect the season.
Those who know me well, know that I love stripes and polka dots, so you will find these patterns on repeat as time goes on.
I’ve included 26 items including shoes and accessories that can be mixed and matched for a variety of looks. I am happy with this collection as I feel that it truly reflects my personal style.
What’s in my Summer 2021 capsule wardrobe?
As this is my first time creating a capsule wardrobe, I used a combination of items that I already had, with some new items. I focused on the summer essentials such as loose tops, shorts, dresses and only added two pairs of pants. I also added a nice denim jacket as it’s always good to have something to layer with for those cooler days.
Tops
The majority of tops in my collection are loose-fitting tops that can be easily paired with shorts or pants. All the tops are in neutral colours and are summer staples, so it’s really easy to find pieces that go well with them. You can’t go wrong with a white t shirt either.
The Texas weather is really hot, so I focus on the short-sleeved tops, adding a denim jacket for days when I need to add an extra layer.

Bottoms
When it comes to bottoms in the summer months, I like to focus heavily on shorts. Denim shorts should be a staple in any summer wardrobe. Shorts are not only easy to throw on, but they also pair well with many different types of tops and are perfect for warm weather.
Although I didn’t include any skirts in this collection, you can easily substitute one of the pairs of shorts for a skirt of your choice.

Dresses
I added several really cute summer dresses to the collection. Dresses are so easy because you don’t need to think as much about whether things go together. I love maxi dresses, shirt dresses and everything in between. You just throw it on with a nice pair of shoes and you know that you’re good to go. You can also pair with a blazer for a more business casual look or a pair of heels for date night.
I’ve also been loving rompers lately.

Shoes
In the summer months, I chose comfort over anything. The capsule wardrobe features 4 pairs of shoes that you can wear depending on the occasion. A pair of black heels is useful because it is so versatile and can be used to dress up any outfit and you can’t go wrong with a pair of good sandals.

Accessories
Sunglasses are a summer essential. Choose your favorite pair and add it to the list.
I also included a few purses to the collection as well as a summer hat for those days when I want to protect your head and face from the sun.
